The first episode of series 1 served as an introduction to the people of James Turner Street in Birmingham. The criminal nature of the street was emphasised. Danny Smith was shown to have violating a legal order against his presence in Birmingham's city centre. Fungi was exposed as being involved in the petty theft of magazines.
By contrast, some relatively more benign activities were also highlighted. Smoggy was seen to be trying to raise money through more-or-less legitimate sales of small items, and White Dee tried to put a positive spin on community life. She was shown in a matronly light, giving advice and comfort to Black Dee and Fungi.
